Wooden Truck Creates Friendship

Eric Watson, a U.S. Navy Veteran, spent his time in the military working as a diesel mechanic. For the past year, Eric has been a volunteer in the Canandaigua VA woodshop.

Currently, Eric is building trucks out of wood. His mechanical background in the Navy has given him the vision to be able to create his designs.

Eric gave one of the trucks he designed, built, and painted to Merle Love, a Veteran living in one of the community living centers. Merle was very excited seeing the truck as he drove trucks similar to the model during his time in the Navy.

The woodshop is open five days a week. Veterans may sand, paint, and/or glue woodworking projects they enjoy. Volunteers like, Eric provides coaching and encouragement to Veterans as they develop woodworking skills.

Veterans and non-Veterans can volunteer in the woodshop as a part of VA’s recreation therapy program. To learn more visit: http://www.canandaigua.va.gov/giving/index.asp or to become a volunteer call (585) 393 - 7759.
