Many colleges in New York State, and even more around the country, require students to have health insurance coverage. But for Veterans, VA offers first-class health care that could save you thousands.

More and more, colleges are informing students of this requirement. If they don’t have coverage, the school will often sign them up for a mandatory plan offered through an arrangement between the school and a health insurance provider. School-sponsored plans can cost you $500 or more per semesterThe coverage offered by these plans can vary greatly

If you are an eligible Veteran, the important thing to know is VA health care counts as health coverage for college students. Use the benefits you’ve earned and you can save up to hundreds of dollars a semester.

The first step in applying for VA health care is filling out form 10-10EZ. It can be done online or on paper. You can also apply by phone or at a VA medical center. Once you’re signed up, contact your school to find out about waiving the coverage they provide. You will want to do this as soon as possible to avoid any deadlines. That way, you can pursue your educational goals with as little strain as possible.
