Canandaigua VA Medical Center
“Seniors Helping Srs.”
The “Seniors Helping Srs.” program consists of Canandaigua Academy Seniors, who as Medical Center volunteers, are committed to teaching “Sr” Veterans (age 50 or older) how to use various electronics. They meet one on one with their “Sr” partner for 4 weeks, showing them how to create an email account; how to use an electronic hand held device for appointment management, do Google searches and set up facebook accounts.
Tammy Beattie, IT Specialist, VistA Imaging, designed the project wanting to bring area youth and Veterans together.
“I’ve got a soft spot for our Vets. After all, it’s a special person who’s willing to take a bullet for a complete stranger and that describes every Veteran here. Our kids need to remember that. Freedom isn’t Free—it costs many dearly. This seemed like the perfect project. The kids need the service hours for graduation. It’s like breathing to them and the Vets love seeing them. A win-win all the way around!” said Beattie.
