LEARNING TO SKATE
This past winter, seven Veterans representing the Canandaigua VA Medical Center and the Rochester VA Outpatient Clinic participated in the OASIS Adaptive Sports (Outdoor Adventures for Sacrifice in Service) ice skating program. OASIS is a non-profit organization offering instruction, equipment and support to disabled military veterans in a variety of sports activities.
During the three session program held at the Sports Centre at MCC, participants were provided hockey skates, helmets, arm pads and one–on-one skating instructions. Funding and instruction donations were provided by the Rochester Americans Alumni.
Before the March 22, session Veteran Jonathan Stanley thank the volunteers:
“Many combat veterans must work hard to allow other people to get close, even their families. Enduring wartime experiences often times can cause us to subconsciously build a firewall around us. Through your compassion, welcoming words and patience you all allowed us to experience and appreciate “the ice”, a place you all call home, and the therapeutic escape it can provide…thank you all for priceless time, gifts and unforgettable moments. That’s what service is about!
With the huge success of this program, Veterans can look forward to it starting up next fall and continuing through the winter.
