Dr. Tommy Sowers visits Veterans Crisis Line
On December 7, Dr. Tommy Sowers, Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs was at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center visiting the National Veterans Crisis Line and meeting with Crisis Line staff members.
Deployed twice to Iraq as a Green Beret, Dr. Sowers’ military career included leading and advising U.S. and Iraqi units on counterinsurgency operations. An 11-year veteran of the U.S. Army, Dr. Sowers was first commissioned into the Corps of Engineers, serving in the 1st Infantry Division in Bamberg, Germany, where he led a combat engineering platoon in support of Peacekeeping Operations in Kosovo.
As a Veteran, Sowers said he understands the challenges new Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan face. With the Veterans Crisis Line playing such a crucial role, Sowers said it was important for him to see it first-hand.
As VA Assistant Secretary, Sowers represents and advises U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki on matters relating to media relations, public affair, and intergovernmental affairs.
“I have a clear message for the Iraq and Afghanistan generation of Veterans,” said Sowers. “Your wartime service made you tough and strong and the VA will make you stronger.”
