Syndicated Advice Columnist Amy Dickinson Attends VA Adult Day Health Program
The Canandaigua VA Medical Center serves Veterans in five, mostly rural counties, in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. Veterans’ family members were interested in accessing VA Adult Day Health Center services which are sited at the medical center’s main campus, a location too far to transport their loved ones or not on a transportation route for rural or suburban buses.
As part of the VA T21 Initiative, (Transforming The 21st Century) Grant funding was obtained to develop a team-approach social model Mobile Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) Program to meet the needs of Veterans and their families who reside in rural and suburban areas. With the support of a traveling team of VA care providers, these rural and suburban Veterans, along with their caregivers, remain living in their homes longer. The Veterans experience coordinated and enhanced Veteran-centric services, and their caregivers report less strain. The program is based at four American Legion Posts located within the Veterans communities, thus increasing the camaraderie and spirit of VA care.
A very important part of the program day is reading "Ask Amy" www.askamydaily.com in the daily newspaper. This activity is affectionately known as "Dear Veteran". Once the Vets have come up with their own solution for a writer's dilemma, they are compared to Amy's response. The Vets really enjoy concurring with Amy's advice and are puzzled when they don't- with Amy, of course, not having provided the "best" solution!!!
Via e-mail, RN Program Manager Nina Mottern shared this information with Ms. Amy Dickinson, the author of this syndicated advice column, which is carried in over 150 newspapers and read by an estimated 22 million readers daily. She also extended an open invitation for Ms. Dickinson to come meet these wise Veterans.
To everyone's delight, on August 2, 2012, Amy Dickinson, graciously visited with Veterans at the Greece NY, American Legion Post 468 location and shared a real time, live "Dear Veteran" experience! During her visit, Ms. Dickinson shared a writer's concern regarding a military issue and asked for everyone's thoughts about it. She truly appreciated the sensitivity, insight and perspective our Veterans had to offer. The Canandaigua VAMC wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Ms. Dickinson for her wonderful expression of gratitude for this very special group of individuals!
